Source: Cybex Taking the baby for a stroll in the infant car seat can compromise not only their health but also their safety. When exposed to UV rays, the outer part of the infant car seat—usually plastic—begins to degrade, just like clothes pegs left in the sun. This wear accelerates the aging of the car seat and can seriously compromise its effectiveness in case of an accident. Instead of absorbing impact, the materials can break, which is extremely dangerous. Furthermore, in terms of ergonomics, infant car seats that allow a lying position tend to receive negative evaluations, which justifies their exclusion from our top 10. Source: Cybex A reclining infant car seat gives a false sense of security for prolonged use outside the car context and a strong incentive for its use in strollers. Babies lying for long periods in an infant car seat: can develop problems of plagiocephaly (see study); have a higher risk of oxygen desaturation, and the fact that the infant car seat reclines does not help reduce the risk (see study); run the risk of overheating – as they remain lying on an EPS surface – (you can observe this whenever you remove your baby from the infant car seat: you will see they are completely drenched – especially in Spring and Summer); its use is clinically unadvisable outside the car context (see study); manufacturers advise against using the infant car seat for periods longer than 1h30. Without built-in wheels: Exactly for the same reasons I gave for non-reclining ones: it encourages prolonged use of the infant car seat, compromises the durability and integrity of the materials, and is harmful to the baby's health. 6. Homologation Infant car seats are approved under two distinct homologations: R129 (more current and safer) and R4404; those with R129 homologation receive a higher score. R129: Uses Q-dummies (higher biofidelity – the degree to which it can represent the biological system on which it is based – than P-dummies) for evaluating criteria in a crash test; Q family of crash test dummies Injury criteria evaluated: chest, head, and abdominal acceleration Dummy Q0: still no abdominal sensors; Approval based on the baby or child's height; Crash tests performed: rear impact, frontal impact, and side impact Side impact test. Energy absorption material: EPS and/or side impact protection EPS – Expanded Polystyrene is a high-quality energy-absorbing foam In my child road safety workshops, I usually joke with parents about their tendency to feel infant car seats to see if they're good. This behavior is completely normal and shows that often, our focus is more on comfort—after all, we do the same when choosing a sofa or a chair—than on safety. However, a good infant car seat should be 100% covered with EPS (and not just have a thin layer on the head) and be sufficiently rigid to ensure adequate protection. Example of side impact protection material in an infant car seat In addition to EPS, we can also look for dynamic energy absorption materials. These types of materials are especially important for protecting the baby in case of a side impact, as they ensure softness in the contact zone (inner part bends) and become stiffer on the outer part. Possibility for the infant car seat to use an ISOfix base The Isofix system is the most efficient method to avoid common installation errors. Therefore, infant car seats that can use a compatible Isofix base will be highly rated. 9. European origin brands In my assessment, I prioritize brands of European origin. My experience in this market has taught me that the values of European brands are more aligned with ours, such as the value of individual human life, the way workers are treated and their working conditions, the ecological footprint, etc. Here are the European origin brands: BeSafe – Norwegian HTS; Chicco –Artsana SpA Italian; Jane (Spanish); Klippan (Oy Klippan AB Finnish) Britax-Roemer- UK – private fund Nordic Capital Avionaut (Polish); Axkid (Swedish); Swandoo (Austria) Origin of other brands that operate in our market: Maxi-Cosi (Dorel, Canadian) Cybex(Chinese – Goodbaby ); Joiebaby ( HK – Chinese); Nunababy(USA and HK – same group as Joie and Graco); 10. Brands with more than 30 years in the market I bet you don't want your baby to be a guinea pig for that brand's infant car seat, right? That's why it's very important for the brand to have been in the market for a long time, to invest heavily in research and development, to know what happens to their car seats in real-life accident situations, and to have had time to incorporate improvements. Over my 20 years in this market, I've seen many child car seats appear on the market with a name and a brand, have disastrous safety results, not minimally meet safety requirements (despite being approved), be expelled... only to reappear later with a different name and brand. BeSafe (1963); Britax-Roemer (1938); Chicco (1958); Maxi-Cosi (1984); Jane (1932); Klippan (1959 Finnish) Brands with fewer years present in our market: Nunababy(2007 Netherlands); Cybex(2005); Avionaut (2009 Poland); Axkid (2009 Sweden); Joie(2009); Swandoo (2014 Austria) 11. Breathability of the infant car seat fabric: mesh fabric 3D mesh fabric The 3D mesh fabric provides much greater air circulation and also absorbs heat and moisture. This is especially important in a country like ours, where it gets very hot, to increase baby's comfort during travel and promote preventive driving by caregivers (who can concentrate on the road with a screaming, foaming baby in the car?) 12. Consumer test results for infant car seats What are they? These are tests conducted by independent consumer organizations, usually twice a year. Furthermore, infant car seats are purchased directly from specialized stores, ensuring that the manufacturer does not control which car seat will be tested, the result, or its disclosure. Therefore, it is common not to find an evaluation for a specific car seat, as it is up to the organization to decide which models are relevant for the market in question. Stiftung Warentest: German consumer testing organization that cooperates with ADAC ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobilclub), in short, is our ACP, i.e., an automobile club that sells a range of services, insurance and sometimes products. ÖAMTC (Österreichischer Automobil, Motorrad & Touring Club) – it's like our ACP TCS (Touring Club Schweiz)- ditto DECO: Consumer association that publishes results based on tests performed by ADAC and whose funding source is consumer subscriptions Example of an ADAC test result Criteria Used: 50% Safety: several tests are conducted with different impacts, angles, and different sizes of crash test dummies in a Volkswagen Polo structure. 40% Handling: here, engineers and ordinary people are used to install the car seat in the car according to the instruction manual, and the following are evaluated: risk of incorrect installation; risk of improper use; ease of fastening the child with the harness; installation and uninstallation; size adjustments; user manual; cleaning and maintenance. 10% ergonomics: sitting position, comfort, space for the child, space the seat occupies in the car. Chemicals: do not impact the score if the result is less than 3.5. The chemicals tested are: PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) Phthalate (softeners) Organophosphate (flame retardant) Phenols Formaldehyde 13. Maximum back length This feature, in an infant car seat, is not the most important, as there are several conditions that can lead to the baby outgrowing the infant car seat sooner. For example, some babies don't like traveling lying down after 4 to 6 months, others develop a lot of curiosity and need to see outside, and there are also travel dynamics that require more attention from the caregiver. Therefore, this feature does not directly influence the score, but serves as additional information if your tie-breaking criterion is the size of the infant car seat. 14. Price The higher the price of the infant car seat, the lower its score will be, and it will only be compensated by the additional safety features incorporated into it. 15. Ease of placing the baby in the infant car seat It's essential that placing the baby in the infant car seat is simple, not least to reduce the number of installation errors (to see how to place the baby in the infant car seat, check out my other article where I show step-by-step what to consider). Here, I considered the existence of magnets to move/hold the harness (and avoid the hassle of looking for the harness when placing the baby), the ease of tightening/releasing the harness (the button where everything fits), visibility of the harness release (button that allows slackening the belts). 16. Ease of installing the infant car seat in the car In my Child Road Safety workshop, I always emphasize that it's useless to have the best infant car seat on the market if it is incorrectly installed. The consequences of an improperly installed infant car seat (in fact, any car seat) are disastrous, and the reality is that about 70% of car seats are incorrectly installed. Even if they can use the ISOfix system, many infant car seats will be installed in the car with the seatbelt system, especially when one of the caregivers is more anxious and travels alone (see article or review below on the precautions to take when traveling alone and the safest place). So here I will evaluate if the way to secure the handle, to pass the seatbelts, and if the illustrations on the sides are easy to interpret is intuitive. Correct installation indications 17. Cushions attached to the headrest Since parents frequently lose infant car seat accessories, harness protection cushions are among the most ordered items — both at Bonabebe and international stores. Therefore, when these cushions are fixed to the infant car seat, it's a huge advantage. In case of an accident, using the harness without protection can cause cuts to the baby. 18. Feedback system for the Isofix base of the infant car seat Isofix base clips The more feedback the ISOFIX system gives us about the installation, the easier it is to achieve a correct installation. Currently, there are ISOFIX systems with visual and audible feedback at each stage, and others with only audible feedback in some parts. This will not be a preponderant item in my evaluation, as many infant car seats tend to be secured with seatbelts, especially during the first 6 months of the baby's life. 19. Appropriate height of infant car seats Here, I checked whether the height indicated on the approval label is compatible with the actual back length of the infant car seat. Although this criterion does not weigh heavily in the final score, it helps to align expectations. After all, some manufacturers indicate maximum heights that do not correspond to the usable space of the car seat. 20. Maximum baby weight Maximum weight supported by the infant car seat The maximum weight for infant car seats is largely irrelevant, as in 20 years of experience, I have never seen a baby reach that limit — they usually reach the height limit much sooner. Therefore, this information does not significantly influence the evaluation but serves as informative data. 21. Appropriate age for using infant car seats I know that infant car seats are often recommended as the safest option, and the ideal is to prolong their use for as long as possible. However, I only agree with this statement if journeys are calm and there are no uncomfortable or agitated babies in the infant car seat. Furthermore, the truth is we never know exactly what kind of baby we will have. Therefore, I don't think it's relevant to invest excessively in an infant car seat at this initial stage, in order to keep options more flexible for the next seat. In summary, it is essential to have a safe infant car seat, but not necessarily one that lasts too long. 22. Isofix base for infant car seats with rotation capability Infant car seat with swivel Isofix base. Source: Maxi Cosi At the infant car seat stage, I don't find this feature very relevant. Because, whether the base rotates or not, we will always tend to rotate the infant car seat on the base when placing the baby in the car. 23. V-shaped head support At this point, the evaluation's concern was the infant car seat's ability to contain the baby's head without excessive movement. 24. Adjustable infant insert for car seats Similar to what we observed for the adjustable harness, an adjustable infant insert will also allow the correct placement of the baby in the car seat. It ultimately influences the angle at which the baby travels as well as the position of the harness.
